Established
in 1989, as the Department of Biotechnology, the School
of Life Sciences and Chemical Technology has continued to focus on
the provision of useful education through active learning.
Our courses are designed to not only meet the current and future demands
of industry in Singapore but also the ambitions of our students to proceed
to higher level studies. All courses are regularly evaluated by our advisory
boards and by our external examiners. The former consists of experts from
the industry and research and academic institutes in Singapore while external
examiners are professional staff from top universities from the US, Australia
and the UK.
Many of our graduates proceed to degree and higher degree level studies
in Singapore and overseas.
Our mission is simple. We want to provide our students with the best education
and training in their related fields. We want our graduates to be useful
all-rounders who can play a major role in the development of Singapore.
We want our students to be able to learn how to learn.
Gregory Chow (lecturer) and Alvin Kiang (student) have set up a very simple
hydroponics system on board Jocara. Caroline will be experimenting with
growing different vegetables for food. The School of Life Sciences and
Chemical Technology's message and aim of hydroponics project: It will
be a means of assessing its feasibility on an environment where resources
such as water are limited. This project will also provide a look at the
adaptability of the technology to a crew of 4 with little horticultural
experience.
Caroline
will be keeping a hydroponics journal. Click on the image to see how the
vegetables are doing.
